It’s that time of the year again….whether you celebrate it or not Xmas cannot be avoided and what better way to get into the spirit of celebrations than to watch some good festive movies.
I’m a sucker for feel-good family movies this time of the year. For me, the holidays are all about family …and food! 😉
So without further adieu, I give you my 10 Top Xmas Movies:
Baby Buddy slips into Santa’s sack on Xmas and is unwittingly transported back to the North Pole; where he is raised as an Elf. As an adult Buddy feels he doesn’t fit in, he is told the truth about where he comes from and so travels to New York to find his real father. Hilarious chaos ensues. Buddy finds love, saves Christmas and restores his relationship with his estranged father. Will Farrell is perfect in the role of Buddy. A Must-see, feel-good, family friendly comedy. 5/5
2. How The Grinch Stole Christmas
I LOVE Dr Seuss! Love all his books. Jim Carey really brings The Grinch to life, like no other actor can! The mean-spirited Grinch hates Xmas and all the Whos in Whoville, because of a being embarrassed as a child. Through the love of a child little Cindy Lou Who, he learns to love Xmas and The Whos again. Another all round family favourite and feel good movie. 5/5
Now here’s a black and white classic and an award-winning film. This has got to be one of my favourite olden day movies. An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed. (taken from IMBD} If you enjoy a good black and white movie, watch this one! 5/5
Watch this animated classic to discover with Charlie Brown the true meaning of Xmas. Great for the kids and those who appreciate animation. 3/5
There are 2 versions to this movie, one made in 1947 and the recent remake which I have watched starring the oh-so-cute darling Mara Wilson and Lord Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle himself. Is Santa Claus real? Do you believe in Santa? Watch this heart-warming family movie proving just that! 4/5
6. Gremlins
’80s classic starring Corey Feldman and Howie Mandel (he was the voice of the lovable Gizmo) A salesman is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one at a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the “mogwai” but sells it to him with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve. 4/5
Ok here’s a more grown up comedic Xmas flick, which I’m sure the empty nesters will appreciate. Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis decide to do things a little different for Xmas this year with their daughter away. Watch what happens as they try to change traditions…there goes the neighborhood! 😀 4/5
Yes, I know this is a little cheesy but Tim Allen is goofy, funny and so family friendly. He accidentally kills Santa and is recruited to fill his boots. Moral of this story: Don’t kill Santa or prepare to face the consequences 3/5
9. Nightmare before Xmas
Another animation but truly unique in the style that only Tim Burton can deliver. Jack Skellington, King of Halloweentown gets a little tired of the same fright after fright and discovers the warmth of Christmastown. He wants Santa’s job, so tries to kidnap him but watch this to find out what happens in the end. Pure magical genius! Not sure if this is suitable for kids though, maybe the bigger ones. 4/5
10. Bad Santa
This one is definitely NOT for the kids. Full on grown up comedy featuring con man santa Billy Bob Thornton, Bad Elf Tony Cox and comedy legend Bernie Mac. An annual Christmas Con goes awry, will this terrible twosome face justice? There is bad language, alcohol and suggestive conduct so watch when kids are out. 3/4
Please Note: All views are my own. i am not being paid to endorse these movies (*i wish* 😉 )
