Grape Expectations at Grande Provence

Not just another wine farm, not just another Harvest Festival. This stunning 325-year-old Heritage wine estate tucked away in the French town of Franschhoek in the Western Cape, South Africa far exceeded my expectations.

“Over 325 years ago, French Protestant Pierre Joubert hid his bible in a loaf of bread and fled his home town of La Motte-dโ€™Aigues in Provence to avoid religious persecution. In 1694, along with other Huguenots, he arrived in Olifantshoek (Which means Elephants Corner. It was later renamed to Franschhoek).

Having married another passenger while aboard theย Bergchina, (after his first wife died tragically on the same voyage), Pierre and his new wife, Isabeau Richarde, soon prospered on their farm. They acquired other local farms including Belingchamp, Lโ€™Ormarins, La Motte, and La Roche.” (Excerpt from the history of Grande Provence)

On the spacious green lawns of Grande Provence, you will be greeted by the friendly giant bronze faces of artist Anton Smit .

Tasty Treat

On arrival my friends were treated to a wine tasting, whilst I diligently sipped on my sparkling grapetizer. Our friendly and knowledgable waitress Francis explained the notes of each of the 3 varietals of wine.

Harvest Table

A smorgasbord of tantalizing delights awaited us. We tucked into some hearty fare, seated at a cordial community table. After devouring delicious South African foods, that I got to share with my Swedish friends, we couldn’t wait for the much-anticipated Grape Stomping.

Grape Stomping

How was wine originally made? We were about to find out through experience…Grape Expectations indeed! What fun to feel the juicy, ripe goodness crunching beneath our feet.

Feast for the eyes

Grande Provence satiated our thirst and hunger with their delectable edibles. In addition, the incredible art gallery more than quenched our desire for the creative. From sculptures to paintings, to pottery and other decorative art ALL available for purchase it really was a feast for the eyes.

Luxury Living

Whether you’re simply out for a sumptuous dining experience, or luscious wine tasting in their award-winning The winery, you can even extend your visit with an overnight stay in any of their luxury suites and villas, you will not be disappointed.
