Just outside of Brackenfell, not quite Stellenbosch along Bottelary Road you will find this family run wine farm Hartenberg Wine Estate.

The farm dates back to the early 1700s starting with four leggers of wine to todays award winning wines and more well reknowned Gravel Hill Shiraz.

The actual gravel that the famous Gravel Hill Shiraz is named after

Haartenberg is 170 Hectares, 65 of which is basically a wetland and home to many wild animals and birds. As such the staff and owners have taken the responsible conservation approach of ensuring sustainable use of all natural resources, leaving the land in pristine condition not harming nature.

The Underground Cellar

Their underground cellar is the largest privately owned cellar in  the Western Cape. It was
commissioned in the late 1980’s,  and is also home to the stained glass art works of German coppersmith, Karl Heinz Wilhelm. The collection of 12 works describe each of the twelve phases of cultivating and producing wine and took two years to complete.

Hartenberg is not not just about the wine, one can also enjoy a delicious meal either indoors or outdoors. They have a wonderful restaurant inside with a beautiful wall mural depicting the history of the estate.

Aswell as an amazing picnic area on their huge lawns, where one can bring the kids buy a picnic hamper and simply enjoy.

I was very fortunate to indulge in some of their delicious offerings paired with 5 of their finest wines.

First off was a freshly farm baked bread platter with snoek paté, with a lovely rather fruity Sauvignon wine.

Seafood platter

Then a fish plate comprising a selection of smoked fish and peppered Mackerel served with the estate’s world-famous Snoek pâté, pickled onions and fresh farm bread. This was paired with my favourite, a buttery smooth Chardonnay wine.

A selection of Braam Burgers

Mains was a new favourite on the menu, as created by #Hartenburger winner Braam Beyers with a green goddess salad. The Braam burger has a delicious chorizo patty, topped with creamy guacamole, melted cheddar, bacon, crispy onion rings and lettuce ad tomato.
