Introducing #MancrushMonday : Dr Riaad Moosa
#MancrushMonday is a FABULOUS new series dedicated to showcasing some seriously inspiring men that have crossed my path. Previously on my #jaxpirational series I gave the ladies some props, it’s time the men got a shout out!
Meet award-winning comedian, presenter, writer and actor; who also is a qualified medical doctor, Dr Riaad Moosa. I so appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to chat with me. So without further adieu let me introduce:
Tell us a bit about yourself
A comedian with an underutilized medical degree.
When and where were you born?
18 June in South Africa
Where are you living now?
Cape Town
What kind of creative are you?
Comedian, Writer, Actor
Name of your brand?
The Comedy Doc
How did you discover your calling?
I always wanted to be a doctor. For as long as I can remember. But I was exposed to standup comedy during University. I was immediately drawn to it and became consumed by the art form. I completed my medical degree, but at the back of my mind I subconsciously knew that comedy was my calling.
What do you love most about what you do?
I’m not sure exactly what it is…but I’m happy when I’m on stage, even if I’m not doing well and my jokes are flatlining. I’m happy when I’m writing and performing jokes. Who knew that it would be my career? I never planned to do comedy, I just followed opportunity. I followed the path of least resistance.
What do you like the least about what you do?
The business of comedy and entertainment. The art form is pure, it’s honest and there’s fair reciprocity but, the business isn’t.
Who or what has been your biggest motivators ?
I’m inspired by excellence and an unwavering drive to succeed. When I was younger, Michael Jordan’s mindset and approach to failure changed my life…the idea that failure is just an opportunity to succeed opened my mind and continues to inspire me to this day. I used that mindset to grow my comedy career but, I still can’t dunk a basketball.
Have you experienced fear along the way & how did you overcome it?
I think I’m too stupid to be fearful. Having kids has made me more fearful. I fear things for them, not myself.
What are your greatest achievement/s?
My kids
Who do you thank for your success?
My parents and my wife.
What upcoming projects do you have?
I’m trying to create a virtual comedy business. I’m trying to figure out ways of performing for people online to feel like the live thing.
How are you currently coping with the #Covid19 Crisis?
I’m not coping. I’m losing my mind. I’m getting a holster for my sanitiser.
Any words of encouragement for other male creatives out there?
I don’t like to give advice as I don’t think I know anything. That being said…if I have to answer this – work hard, and find ways to cultivate excellence in whatever you do. Find something that you love doing and try to master that. Being on the path of mastery keeps you feeling young and inspired.
