Primal Eatery: Meat in the CT
Primal Eatery: The very words conjure up imagery of a terrific primitive feast outdoors with gargantuan slabs of meat sizzling over an open fire.
As a devout carnivore receiving an invitation to experience such a place, had me chomping at the bit.
Of course, I greedily accepted to my palaeolithic heart’s delight!
Borne from the ardent passion of global foodies Kristina Klonaris Felix & Brynn Felix, whose Greek/Bahamian and South African heritages are alluded to throughout the menu, this meatery opened it’s doors in Feb 2017 and has not looked back since
With capacity for only 30 guests, swathed in rich, warm earthy tones, this contemporary enclave with a separate bar on New Church street Cape Town makes for a cozy dining experience.
Warmly greeted by the hostess, General Manager and the Owner Kristina, herself, (how’s that for service? )who prickled our ears with delight as they revealed the menu and specials that were on offer.
Sensory Journey
A “Sensory journey” is what they promise and trust me they do not disappoint!
My dining companion had a Twisted (deconstructed) Cosmo (R75 ZAR). Citrus-infused Ketel One Vodka shaken with Cointreau, fresh lime and pomegranate whilst I opted for the non-alcoholic Bombay Basil Mocktail, titillating our taste buds in anticipation for the main course. Frothy apple, lemon, lime juice and cellulose with a lick of basil syrup sophistication went down a treat!
The menu is fairly straightforward, with 5 Starters, 5 Mains, 5 Sides, 4 Sauces and 4 desserts. This included poultry, seafood, meat and even a vegetarian option.
Without further ado let me jump right in and tell you what we ordered.
Pre-starters:
A bread platter of sourdough bread and pita bread with hummus, sundried tomato butter and garlic butter spread was on offer.
Starters:
I opted for a Flaming saganaki, kefalotiri cheese flambéed with brandy and served with fire-toasted pita. (R75 ZAR) A visual feast of flame and cheese, delectable to the last bite.
My companion opted for Duck livers cooked in harissa, burnt onion, labneh and fire toasted pita (R85 ZAR) which was deliciously spiced.
Mains:
Beef Rib Eye medium well-done 300g for me yes please! (approx. R230 ZAR) with a side of flame-roasted sweet potato and tenderstem broccoli with lemon and feta crumble (R45 ZAR) Impeccably served and plated, cooked to perfection, I devoured every juicy bite! I cannot fault the vegetables, they were not overcooked with just the right amount of crunch to the broccoli stems.
It was a tough call, as my companion selected the Grilled market fish cauliflower and coconut purée, curried cauliflower and a cashew nut Malay cream (R 180 ZAR) of which I relished a sample. Paleo Lover’s heaven found right here in one dish. I imagine this is what the Bahamas would taste like, delicately infused coconut, cauliflower and cashew nut cream mélange dancing on your tongue.
Sweet Endings
Last but most definitely not least, every great love affair has an even greater ending. Our great foodie love affair was rounded off by Deep fried Oreos braaied marshmallow ice cream, peanut butter and strawberry jelly (R80 ZAR). The owners fell in love at first bite when they discovered this decadent dessert in Miami, I’m told by Kristine. It’s not hard to see why.
My compliments to Wes & his team in the kitchen, for dishes par excellence!
To the entire staff and team for exceptional service and making us feel right at home, thank you.
My greatest gratitude goes to Kristina and Brynn for extending the invitation to dine at your fine establishment. We loved the authentic feel, warm ambience, and genuine passion you have for people.
